Storage Hints

Gather as many boxes you will need plus good quality tape, markers, and packing material
Try to use uniform sized boxes for easy packing
Make an inventory of your items and keep it in a safe place at home
Plan your storage space; place items you need to access at the front
CAUTION! Do NOT store anything FLAMMABLE (e.g. paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, paint, etc.)
Leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit for easier access
Leave a small space between the walls and boxes to allow for air circulation
Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top
List contents of boxes on all four sides; number the boxes and seal with tape
Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked "FRAGILE" and stored on end
Furniture with drawers can be used as storage space for small items. Wrap them in towels or blankets to prevent breakage
Tables that have removable legs should be broken down to save space
Many sofas can be stored on end to save floor space. Wrap cushions in plastic and place on top.
Cover stuffed furniture with cardboard or blankets to protect them from dust
If you stand mattresses on their side, prop them up so they stand straight, otherwise they may bend over time
Don't use garbage bags for storage; they get ripped, retain moisture and don't protect the contents
Make use of vertical space too - stack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones
Don't overpack boxes - keep the boxes square, not bulging, and light enough to lift
Use the right size box - smaller for heavier items like books and dishes, and larger boxes for lighter items like blankets and towels
